Oktoberfest: tradition meets sustainability and vegan diversity

Sustainable Oktoberfest – is that possible?

Oktoberfest is changing – in a positive way! What used to be regarded as a pure beer and meat festival is now becoming a role model for other major events in terms of sustainability. The Wiesn is fully committed to Munich green electricity and green gas, as well as re-usable products instead of disposable ones and promotes regional products in order to reduce CO2 emissions. Measures to reduce waste are also having an effect, with waste being reduced from 247 tonnes (2008) to 91 tonnes (2023).

Meatless bliss at the Wiesn

Not just ecological, but also culinary: the selection of certified organic, vegan and vegetarian dishes is constantly growing. In 2023, there were already exclusively organic chicken in 3 large tents (the Paulaner Festzelt, the Fischer-Vroni and the Hühner- und Entenbraterei Ammer). Cheese fans will enjoy the typical vegetarian dishes, the cheese spaetzle or Obatzda with Radi and original Wiesnbrezn. A visit to the Wiesn is also the perfect opportunity to try other meat-free Bavarian specialities:Semmelknödelgröstl, Knödel und Rahmschwammerl (mushrooms in cream sauce), Schupfnudeln or something from the variety of Knödel dishes, e.g. Parmesan pretzel Knödel on a Bavarian vegetable platter with herb sauce, spinach or cheese Knödel or even the “Knödel-Dreier-Looping”.

This allows you to enjoy your Oktoberfest without any regrets, regardless of whether you are avoiding animal products for ethical or health reasons. Gluten-free and lactose-free alternatives are also available, so that everyone can celebrate the festival without having to compromise on enjoyment.

Safe space for women and girls

Much has also been done to ensure safety at the Wiesn. We particularly like the Safe Space, which has been ensuring a ‘safe Wiesn for girls and women’ since 2003 and provides rapid assistance to those affected in an emergency. If you feel unwell, threatened or disorientated, you are also very welcome in the Safe Space – you can even charge your mobile phone there. For a safe way home at night, there is a €5 taxi voucher for women and girls.

The sustainable concept shows that even a centuries-old tradition like the Oktoberfest can be on the way to a more environmentally friendly future. Every year, the Wiesn becomes a little greener – and in a way that not only gives visitors fun, but also a clear conscience. Cheers to you!
